Common Fears in Remodeling
Home remodeling can be a little overwhelming, especially if it’s something you’ve never done before. The good news is you’re not alone. Here are some of the most common fears we consistently hear:
- Making the wrong choice: Choosing the right contractor for the job, who you can trust, and getting the end result for which you pay.
- Return on investment: Am I paying too much? Will I get the return when we sell?
- Surprises: What are we going to uncover when we open up the walls? What are the hidden costs we’re not considering?
- Disruption: How messy is this going to be? Does our family have to move out?
- Timelines: How long will this take? What are the potential delays? Are we going to finish on time?
These are all valid concerns and, at times, an unfortunate reality. However, there are ways to overcome each fear.
- Before choosing the right contractor, you can ask the right questions. How long have you been in business? Have you done projects similar to ours? Do you have a list of references we can contact?
- Return on investment really comes down to two things. Resale value and quality of life. If you plan on living in the home for three to five years and beyond, you’re more likely to get a better resale value. If you’re looking for quick improvements in order to put your house on the market, you probably want to scale back on your remodeling investment. Quality of life means “How much will this project positively impact my family and how we enjoy our home?”
- Surprises are unavoidable, but with proper planning and due diligence, a reputable contractor is able to minimize surprises by considering all possibilities. If you have these conversations upfront, it’s easier to mitigate should something arise.
- Plan for the worst and hope for the best when it comes to disruption. Again, proper planning can help minimize most disruptions, but if you go in knowing that your daily routine will be interrupted, it’s easier to process the disruptions that may occur.
- Communication is the key to navigating project timelines. An experienced contractor should be able to create a realistic job schedule and inform you of deviations along the way. Understanding that there are certain things beyond your control, proper planning and an open line of communication can help maintain most project timelines.
