DiFabion Wins a Regional CotY!

The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) named DiFabion Remodeling a 2024 Southeast Regional Contractor of the Year (CotY) winner in the Residential Addition Under $250K category in its annual awards competition. Each year, NARI presents CotY Awards to members who have demonstrated outstanding work through their remodeling projects.

The CotY Awards are the highest form of recognition by industry leaders and peers. “NARI CotY winners represent the best of the best in the remodeling industry,” says NARI Co-CEO Tracy Wright, CAE, CNAP. “This year’s competition received the highest number of entries in over a decade, and the judges consistently commented on the rewards of reviewing this level of superior craftsmanship and design. We’re extremely proud and honored at DiFabion Remodeling to receive this award and look forward to creating many more “CotY worthy” projects for our clients for years to come. Wish us luck when the National winners are announced in April at the Evening of Excellence during this year’s Annual Conference in Virginia!

Family First

As extremely busy health professionals, these clients had several important needs to make everyday life more manageable and feel less cluttered. The existing kitchen had many limitations, including lack of functional storage, failing appliances, minimal counter space, congested flow, and lack of island seating. The existing island was tiny, and the flow from the adjacent rooms was constricted. In the rear of the home, there was a small screen porch and rickety old deck that were borderline-unsafe to use.

In design, we determined that the best course of action was to remove the porch and deck and use that space to extend the existing kitchen while adding a multi-tiered deck for mixed use leading out to the natural beauty of the backyard. The addition would allow for a completely new kitchen design with an extensive and purposeful cabinetry plan. The biggest question was, “How could this difficult endeavor be executed with a number of unique challenges staring us in the face?” In the end, the daunting task of building this new addition was well worth the challenge because of the immediate impact it had on this family and their quality of life.

Blending Geometric Shapes With the Natural Landscape

There are many ways to create a luxury outdoor oasis. From simple changes to complex designs, utilizing the home’s natural landscape will help complement the flow from the interior to its surroundings. Using geometric shapes when designing various exterior elements-porches, decks, firepits, pergolas, etc., creates visual interest in your backyard. Utilizing this tip incorporates the new structure into the existing landscape, making it appear to have been there all along.

The natural landscape can be the starting point of the exterior design; however, the home’s structure itself must be considered as well. Geometric shapes are the middle ground between the abstract/organic shape of the landscape and the rigid/formal structure of the home. The exterior elements are then able to combine these two opposing elements into one cohesive space.

For example, if the backyard has a gorgeous view with a steep drop, a way to maximize its use without forcibly changing its natural shape could be to incorporate a hexagonally shaped porch. Each side promotes a natural view while providing enough depth to add a sitting area or firepit. Perhaps adding a spiral staircase can help offset the rigidity of the hexagon shape and save more usable porch space. Creating a semi-circle of seating around a firepit encourages the user to orientate themselves in a certain direction, maybe toward the intended view and also creating an area meant for fun and relaxation. Working with fun shapes can give your yard space a distinctive personality that feels “right at home”!
