Top Tips To Keep Your Home Secure During a Renovation
A remodel, no matter the size, often means turning your home and schedule temporarily upside down! Not only do you have the dust and noise to worry about, but you also have a seemingly unending stream of contractors and construction workers coming in and out of your home.
Although you know these people are professionals, when your home becomes a revolving door to people you don’t know, your home’s security becomes a priority. Here are a few tips that will give you peace of mind during your next renovation.

Hire Trusted Contractors
No matter if you’re doing a whole-home renovation or a simple kitchen remodel, finding a reputable contractor is a must. Here’s how you can be sure to hire someone you can trust:
- Ask friends and family for recommendations.
- Check on their online presence by reading through their website and online reviews.
- Make sure they have proper insurance and licensing. At a minimum, they should carry personal liability and property damage insurance. Since licensing requirements vary by state, be sure to check your local building department to determine what’s required.
- Will they be using subcontractors? If so, confirm that the subcontractors are also licensed and insured.

Protect Your Home From Dust & Debris
A home remodel isn’t always the cleanest project. However, there are ways you can keep parts of your home safe from the inevitable dirt and dust. Our remodeling experts recommend making sure the following precautions are taken before starting your project:
- Covering your countertops: Since any flat surface becomes a workbench, you can protect your countertops from scratches and nicks by covering them in cardboard. Wipe down your counter before taping down the edges of clean cardboard to your countertops.
- Protect corners and door frames: Another great use for cardboard is protecting door frames and edges. Even the most careful of workers will bump into things every now and again. Cut the corners out of a cardboard box and secure them over your bent corners with painters’ tape.
- Make pathways in the high traffic areas: Protecting your floor that leads to the work area to the outdoors is a no-brainer, but remember to also make a path to the bathroom and electrical panel! You can use plastic flooring, cardboard, or tarps to achieve fast and inexpensive protection.
Keep Kids, Pets & Valuables Safe
No matter how careful you and your contractors are, sometimes kids and pets have a knack for getting into things they shouldn’t. Depending on the size of your remodel, make sure to secure pets in rooms away from the workspace, at a long-term pet care site, or with a friend or family member.
Your kids should stay away from the work zone, any building materials, and any machines or tools. Consider having kids stay with a family member or friend’s house while contractors are at work, or have the remodeling teamwork only when kids are at school or away from the house.
To keep any special antiques or valuables safe from potential damage during the remodel, secure off-site storage, or put smaller items in a lock box or safe away from the work zone. Additionally, remove anything from the walls both in and near the work zone. This will eliminate the possibility of precious mirrors, photos, or artwork from being knocked off the walls due to the vibrations of certain tools and machines.

Take Plenty of “Before” Photos
