Making Home a Forever Home

The owners of this home had no intentions of moving and wanted to make this their forever home. However, the original kitchen required a serious transformation to meet the requirements that fit the homeowners’ functional needs and desired aesthetic.

The existing layout was compartmentalized and had a condensed footprint that inhibited flow, limited the size of a functional island with seating, and posed an obvious need for additional storage and much-needed natural light.

To give the client their dream kitchen, we removed load-bearing walls separating the kitchen, walk-in pantry, back hallway, and butler’s pantry. This allowed us to incorporate a massive island with ample seating that now sits parallel to the main sink, creating a more functional work triangle.

Removing these walls also exposed the side entrance French doors, which now flood the space with an abundance of natural light. What a beautiful transformation!

How To Find the Right Hood Style for Your Aesthetic

Finding the right kitchen hood style to match your style and aesthetic can be a difficult decision to make. There are a wide variety of hood styles and so many options, ranging from classic cabinetry wood hoods to more modern stainless steel chimney styles with a sleek tile and stone surround. The important part of this decision is how you want the hood to play into your kitchen aesthetic.

You can start by thinking about the “statement piece” of your kitchen and what you want people to focus on when they walk in. If the hood is either the statement or a part of the statement, you would want to go with something that contrasts the cabinetry and really stands out. You can look at different colors and materials that make the hood more aesthetically interesting.

There is also the option to play around with the shape of the hood and how it fits into the kitchen, which can add dimension to the room. If the hood is not a part of the statement and instead you want the island, appliances, backsplash, countertop, or some other part of the room to shine, then there are still many options for a more simplified yet beautiful option.

Continuing the backsplash or countertop material to the hood is a great way to keep these aspects as the focal point. If you want to have a more modern look, you can focus on having a less distinct hood that instead blends in with the rest of the kitchen.

When deciding on the style of your hood, make sure to always be true to your aesthetic. Since there are so many options when it comes to hoods, it is important to have a clear idea of how you want the hood to be incorporated into the kitchen and overall design. Whether it be bold and interesting or simple and sleek, it is possible to make this functional appliance a beautiful addition to your home.
