This mid-century modern brick ranch could barely accommodate the needs of a growing family of four, let alone in-laws in need of their own private living area. Parking was also an issue, with a small 2 car garage and shallow driveway. The layout of the existing home was not conducive for three generations of the family living and working on different schedules throughout the entire day. The design was both creative and functional by adding a large two story addition and reconfiguring a portion of the existing home adjacent to the new addition for a different purpose altogether. Maintaining the integrity and style of the existing home, while incorporating a new modern flair with many green building principles, was just as important to the homeowner as the functionality of the new space. The new 2 story addition would include a full master suite with a private balcony overlooking the back yard and a large custom closet transitioning into the existing space, which would now become an office with a powder room accessible to the entire family. The basement level of the addition would become a large 3 car garage, while the original garage would become an in-law suite with a full bathroom and private courtyard.

The final product includes the use of sustainable siding and roofing helping facilitate energy efficiency and water conservation, while providing a unique contrast of old and new. The exterior of the new addition was comprised of a variety of natural and man-made building products, including stone, brick, cedar, metal, concrete, hardi, and ipe, carefully integrated by an elite team of craftsmen and trades. The interior of the new addition provided a seamless flow throughout the house, while displaying meticulous craftsmanship every step of the way. In the end, this beautiful new addition somehow integrated the intrigue of something old, something new, and something unique, for one chaotic symphony of purpose and character.
